Happy St.Brigid's Day from 3rd & 4th Class. Look at the colourful St. Brigid's Crosses we made!
Busy Bees
We have been very busy bees in 3rd & 4th Class over the last few weeks .
In art we studied the fascinating abstract artist, Wassily Kandinsky, who is famous for painting squares with concentric circles. We used his work as inspiration and created pieces which represented an important memory or passion of ours.
In science, we studied DNA. This was very interesting - though we really wanted to eat the sweets we were using as models! We also went to see the Nutty Scientist, who came to visit our local library. We had the opportunity to explore the fascinating properties of dry ice. Thanks to Mark in Cappamore Library for organising this event for us.
Our class were very lucky to be paid a visit by both an All-Ireland Hurling medal and a Hurling All-Star Award. Thanks so much to Limerick hurler, Darragh O'Donovan, for allowing us to see his awards up close. It was a major highlight of the year so far.
We turned our hand to some coding this term in 3rd & 4th Class. We used Beebots to familiarise ourselves with our new Gaeilge vocabulary. We also had the to opportunity to build some cool LEGO creations, which moved when we programmed them using our iPads.
Our class elf, Jimbob, created havoc in our room this term. Unfortunately, he also suffered a rather dramatic fall and sustained a leg injury. He's okay now though and seems to be recovering well.
Our class novel this term, Charlotte's Web, has brought us great joy and excitement this term. We loved the book and really enjoyed discovering how central the theme of friendship was in the novel. We created our own world of Charlotte's Web and we also watched the movie as a treat at the end of term.
What a busy and exciting few weeks it has been. We're very happy to be heading on a Christmas break and are particularly happy that our tree expert, Rhys, has adopted our class Christmas tree and will ensure that it;'s taken care of.
Merry Christmas everyone! 🎄

Delicious DNA! 🧬
This week was Science Week. One of the exciting things we learned about was DNA and genetics. We created our own model of the double helix - which was discovered by scientists in Trinity College in Dublin. We really wanted to eat the delicious sweets we used for our DNA models but we resisted! Remembering to only pair certain sets of colours together took a lot of concentration but it was worth the effort. How cool do our creations look?
A Busy Start to the Year
We've had a great start to the year in our classroom. It has been filled with lots of learning and fun. Some of the highlights of our first half-term included enjoying new maths games, learning about some traditional instruments and making rockets for Space Week. We also designed and built parachutes for our Lego figurines. We enjoyed our trip to Curragh Chase for Tree Day and wrote some recount pieces about our trip when we returned. In maths, we went on a 'Maths Eyes' walk around Cappamore to see what maths we could see in our village. We found lots of examples of 2D & 3D shapes, parallel lines, perpendicular lines, lines of symmetry, angles, patterns and use of numbers. It was a great adventure!
Our class also really enjoyed learning about World War II in history and Fair Trade in geography. It has been a great two months and we're looking forward to more fun coming our way after midterm!

First Day Back!
Welcome back to all the wonderful boys and girls in 3rd & 4th Class! It was great to see you all today, looking very smart in your new uniforms. We have an exciting year of fun and learning ahead of us...
3rd and 4th 2022-2023
Congratulations Girls & Boys! 🎉
Another year has come to an end! The boys and girls have worked so hard this year and, more importantly, have shown such kindness to one another. Thank you for being such a wonderful class, I hope you have enjoyed the year as much as I have. I am so proud of you all and I hope you enjoy the well-earned summer break.
Curious Minds Awards Ceremony
We were delighted to watch today's Curious Minds Awards Ceremony. It was so exciting to see our school's name appear in the "Gold Award" list. We are so proud of our work in STEM this year! 🔭🧪👩🔬👨🔬
End of Year Musical Pieces 🎵
Our class brainstormed all the fun memories we have made together this year. Each group then chose their six favourite moments and represented them using different sounds. The groups had to perform the sound representing each memory of a count of 4.
When all of our pieces we ready to go, we performed them for each other. It was great fun reflecting on our year and listening to each other's creations.

A Great Start to Term 3!
What an interesting and exciting first week of term it has been in our room! This week we have started to learn about many new topics and took part in some fun activities too. On Monday, we started our Gaelic football training with Seán, We had a fantastic time and we are looking forward to more sessions over the coming weeks. We also paid a visit to our local library this week for a talk from a lady named Dee on meditation and wellbeing. Dee spoke to us about our feelings and how we can help ourselves when we experience worries or feel overwhelmed. She also gave us a beautiful love heart gem to remind us to love ourselves no matter what.
We learned about circuits in science at the beginning of the week. Ms. O'Dwyer challenged us to create a lighthouse with a working lightbulb at the top. We also had to design it so that the wires and batteries were hidden. Have a look at the pictures to see how we got on.
Decimals were the next topic for us in maths. While 4th Class learned about these last year, decimals are brand new for 3rd Class. We did lots of activities to familiarise ourselves with them and had to remember the "Decimal Golden Rule". In English, we played a board game to help us learn about prepositions and we began to look at narrative texts. History was interesting this week as we were learning about schools in the past. Did you know that children used to have to bring coal and turf into school each day to help keep the classroom warm? Speaking of warmth, we discovered that one of the symbols of the Holy Spirit is a flame. We made some very cool headbands in Religion when learning about this.
What a busy week, and that's only some of what we were up to. It's shaping up to be a great last term. We can't wait to see what lies ahead!

January Fun!
It has been a busy start to 2023 in 3rd & 4th Class!
We have been working very hard everyday, learning about lots of different topics. In maths, we have been focusing on fractions. We made fraction wheels and friction strips. These have been great in helping us to solve our fraction problems, which can be very tricky at times!
In English, we have been doing lots of work on our persuasive genre. We have studied the structure of a persuasive writing piece (our acronym "OREO" is a great reminder for this) and we have been practicing some important phrases used in persuasive pieces, including oral debates. We have been learning about new grammar and punctuation rules too - do you know the difference between "it's" and "its", because we do!
January has been a very musical month for us. Along with 5th & 6th Class, we participated in Peace Proms in U.L. on the 21st January. We spent lots of time preparing for this performance since the autumn, but it really was worth all the hard work. We had an amazing time. We haven't just been singing though, we have also been learning about timbre in music. Timbre is the "flavour" of sound made by an instrument, for example, brassy, sharp, or bright.
We are continuing to learn about the Ancient Egyptians in history. These people lived thousands of years ago and are fascinating to study. We tried to write our names in hieroglyphics, how do you think we did? This topic linked in nicely to the story of Moses, which we listened to and discussed in religion.
Another highlight for us this month was learning about our lungs and our breathing system. We learned about all the different parts of our body that make up this system, and even created our own lungs using balloons, straws and plastic bottles. This is was so interesting to learn about and lots of fun to make.
That's only some of what we've been up to, can you believe? We've been so busy, but we're having lots of fun too. Roll on February!

Home Sweet Home 🌸
We have been learning about the different buildings in our locality, and in other parts of Ireland. We have also been learning about the various types of homes that people live in. It is amazing to see how many different homes there are! We built many of these homes using origami. This was challenging but great fun. Take a look at some of the homes we built.
Our Nature Table 🍁
Our autumn nature table is coming along very well. It is so exciting to see how much beauty exists all around us!
A special thank you to Rhys for bringing in his young oak tree for us to see 🌳
