HISTORY OF SCOIL CHAITRÍONA
Scoil Chaitríona was initially The Convent School, Cappamore. In 1898 the Sisters of Mercy established a convent in the village of Cappamore. In 1899 the Sisters of Mercy founded The Convent School. Entwined with the theology and philosophy of Catholic education was the educational philosophy of the Sisters of Mercy as handed down by Catherine McAuley and developed and inculcated by succeeding Sisters of Mercy and their colleagues. It was an all girl’s school and catered for the full range of classes from Junior Infants to Sixth Class with boys from Junior Infants to First Class only. In 2006 the Convent School amalgamated with the Boys National School and thus formed Scoil Chaitríona. In 2019 it opened its first ASD class. At present it has six teaching staff, including the principal – Mrs. Blake, two Special Education Teachers and a teacher in the ASD Class. We currently have two SNAs in the main school, two SNAs in the ASD Class, a part-time secretary, a part time caretaker and a school cleaner.
Scoil Chaitríona looks forward in the not too distant future to opening their state of the art ASD Unit and the refurbishment of the existing school building with the support of funding from the Department of Education and Science.
