Ms. O Dwyer
3rd and 4th Class
A Great Start to Term 3!
What an interesting and exciting first week of term it has been in our room! This week we have started to learn about many new topics and took part in some fun activities too. On Monday, we started our Gaelic football training with Seán, We had a fantastic time and we are looking forward to more sessions over the coming weeks. We also paid a visit to our local library this week for a talk from a lady named Dee on meditation and wellbeing. Dee spoke to us about our feelings and how we can help ourselves when we experience worries or feel overwhelmed. She also gave us a beautiful love heart gem to remind us to love ourselves no matter what.
We learned about circuits in science at the beginning of the week. Ms. O'Dwyer challenged us to create a lighthouse with a working lightbulb at the top. We also had to design it so that the wires and batteries were hidden. Have a look at the pictures to see how we got on.
Decimals were the next topic for us in maths. While 4th Class learned about these last year, decimals are brand new for 3rd Class. We did lots of activities to familiarise ourselves with them and had to remember the "Decimal Golden Rule". In English, we played a board game to help us learn about prepositions and we began to look at narrative texts. History was interesting this week as we were learning about schools in the past. Did you know that children used to have to bring coal and turf into school each day to help keep the classroom warm? Speaking of warmth, we discovered that one of the symbols of the Holy Spirit is a flame. We made some very cool headbands in Religion when learning about this.
What a busy week, and that's only some of what we were up to. It's shaping up to be a great last term. We can't wait to see what lies ahead!

January Fun!
It has been a busy start to 2023 in 3rd & 4th Class!
We have been working very hard everyday, learning about lots of different topics. In maths, we have been focusing on fractions. We made fraction wheels and friction strips. These have been great in helping us to solve our fraction problems, which can be very tricky at times!
In English, we have been doing lots of work on our persuasive genre. We have studied the structure of a persuasive writing piece (our acronym "OREO" is a great reminder for this) and we have been practicing some important phrases used in persuasive pieces, including oral debates. We have been learning about new grammar and punctuation rules too - do you know the difference between "it's" and "its", because we do!
January has been a very musical month for us. Along with 5th & 6th Class, we participated in Peace Proms in U.L. on the 21st January. We spent lots of time preparing for this performance since the autumn, but it really was worth all the hard work. We had an amazing time. We haven't just been singing though, we have also been learning about timbre in music. Timbre is the "flavour" of sound made by an instrument, for example, brassy, sharp, or bright.
We are continuing to learn about the Ancient Egyptians in history. These people lived thousands of years ago and are fascinating to study. We tried to write our names in hieroglyphics, how do you think we did? This topic linked in nicely to the story of Moses, which we listened to and discussed in religion.
Another highlight for us this month was learning about our lungs and our breathing system. We learned about all the different parts of our body that make up this system, and even created our own lungs using balloons, straws and plastic bottles. This is was so interesting to learn about and lots of fun to make.
That's only some of what we've been up to, can you believe? We've been so busy, but we're having lots of fun too. Roll on February!

Home Sweet Home 🌸
We have been learning about the different buildings in our locality, and in other parts of Ireland. We have also been learning about the various types of homes that people live in. It is amazing to see how many different homes there are! We built many of these homes using origami. This was challenging but great fun. Take a look at some of the homes we built.
Our Nature Table 🍁
Our autumn nature table is coming along very well. It is so exciting to see how much beauty exists all around us!
A special thank you to Rhys for bringing in his young oak tree for us to see 🌳
