Trip to Ardnacrusha Power Station
We enjoyed our trip to Ardnacrusha Power Station where we had a guided tour by the electricians working there. They showed us how the electricity is generated and explained how the power station was built. It was a very informative and educational outing.
School Tour 2024
This year for our School Tour we went to the UL Adventure Centre in Twomilegate, Killaloe.
For the first half of the day we climbed the high ropes, did archery and some team-building games. After lunch we went out on the kayaks and on the giant paddle boards. We were very hungry after all that so we visited Burger King for some food on the way back to school!

Mindfulness Workshop and Wellness Week
We visited the library for a mindfulness workshop. We made devices which help us to concentrate on our breathing.
During Wellness Week we did a yoga session and some meditation. We really enjoyed it.

Maths Trail with Rang 1 & Rang 2
A Great Start to 2024
In January we went to see Newport College's production of 'Grease'. We really enjoyed it.
We also drew some beautiful robins which were on display for January.
Two teams from our class took part in the Credit Union Table Quiz.
On St. Brigid's Day, we made St. Brigid's Day Crosses from pipe cleaners, and then from rushes. It was a challenge, but lots of fun.
We were learning about bridges in Science, so we made some during STEM, and also from clay.
We were learning about length in Maths, so we headed outside to do some measuring.
We made clay candle-holders for our grandparents, for grandparents day.
We went to the library to see the European Union exhibition that was on display. We took part in a quiz about Europe, it was very informative.
We also did hurling and tag-rugby training.

World War One artefacts
We had a visit from a heritage officer, who brought along a lot of artefacts from WWI. We found this very interesting, as we had spent a lot of time learning about WWI and reading the novel War Horse.
Christmas in Rang 5 & Rang 6 2023
We had a busy lead up to Christmas preparing for our Christmas Pageant - the final Scoil Chaitríona Pageant for Rang 6. We got to wear our Christmas jumpers, and we had a great time swapping gifts for Secret Santa!
We also had our 'Positivi-tea Party' to celebrate the positive attitudes in our classroom.

Science and Biodiversity Day in Doon
We had a great day out in Scoil Tríonóide Naofa in Doon, where we were kindly invited to participate in a Science and Biodiversity workshop with the pupils and teachers there. We did a biodiversity trail, some science experiements, and played uni-hoc and basketball while we were there.
An All Star Award and an All-Ireland Medal visit our classroom!
In September we were delighted when All-Ireland winning hurler Darragh O'Donovan came to visit our school and helped us to raise the Green and Amber Flags. We were very happy to hear that he won an All-Star award this year. We were so surprised when we got to lift the All-Star Award ourselves! A big thank you to Darragh for giving us such an opportunity! We all felt like superstars!
Cycling Lessons
We have been enjoying cycling every Tuesday. We have been practicing safe cycling, how to indicate and turn correctly, as well as playing some cycling games. A big thank you to Ed and Kieran who have been excellent instructors.

In November, we have been learning about renewable energy and wind farms. We made our own wind turbines during STEM time. As you can see in the photos, team work makes the dream work! We presented them to the rest of the school at Assembly.

October Outings: Trip To Curraghchase, Touch Rugby, Meeting Judi Curtin and a Historical Walking Tour
We headed to Curraghchase Forest Park for Tree Day. We had a very interesting guided tour from one of the tree experts who told us lots of information about the trees in the park.
We took part in a fun Touch Rugby tournament in Tipperary Town.
We were also very lucky to have met the fantastic author Judi Curtin. She came to the local library and spoke to us about her books, and how she became a writer. She is an inspiration. We read her book 'Lily at Lissadell' in preparation for her visit.
We enjoyed our trip to Limerick city where we had a fascinating walking tour of the medieval quarter. We passed St. John's Castle, visited the Treaty Stone and also had a sneak peak at the Halloween decorations in the graveyard church.

Mobile Pet Farm
It is always such a treat when the mobile pet farm comes to visit! We had a very enjoyable afternoon playing with and feeding the animals.
All About Space in September
5th and 6th class got off to a very busy start this year. We learned all about Space in History, Geography and Science. We learned about the Solar System, the Moon's phases, Star Constellations, Copernicus and Galileo Galilei's discoveries, how the planets got their names and lots of other interesting facts. We presented all we discovered to the rest of the school during Assembly.

We are very lucky to have Abbie coming to our school every Monday to teach us rugby skills.

Wellbeing Day: Pyjamas Day and A visit from Pádraig Kenny
Today we had a pyjamas day in school to raise funds for Liskennett Farm. We are trying to get the Amber Flag this year and this was the fundraiser we chose to do.
We went to the library where we were treated to a lovely chat with the author of 'Monsters of Rookhaven' - Pádraig Kenny.
In the afternoon we had hot chocolate. It was a really enjoyable day.

Visit to the Fire Station - February 2023
We visited the local fire station in Cappamore this week. We got an opportunity to try on some of the firemen's gear, have a look around the station, try out sitting in the fire truck, and even got to use their hose for target practice! They also showed us how they cut into a car if they need to and gave us some facts about fire safety. We had a fantastic morning. A big thank you to those working in the fire station for showing us around.
All About Light
One of our science topics this year is light. We discussed the importance of the sun for life, artificial vs natural light sources, as well as shadows and the spectrum of colour. We did some experiments using prisms. We also showed that light travels in straight lines. We also made periscopes!
Aztec Projects
We've been learning all about the Aztecs in history. They were the people of light and lived in what is now modern day Mexico. Everyone created and presented excellent projects.
Santa Visit
There was great excitement when Santa came to visit! We each got a selection box and we sang Christmas songs.
Visit from the Whale and Dolphin Group
We had a lovely visit from Sibéal from the Whale and Dolphin Group. She talked to us all about marine life in the seas and oceans around Ireland. We played a game where we had to make decisions in order to protect the food chain and the marine animals and plants. It was a very informative visit and we learned a lot, which helps us in our journey towards our Green Schools Global Citizenship and Marine Environment Flag.
STEM: Creating Structures from Spagetti and Marshmallows
Science Week 2022
We had a busy week this week. Our theme for the month is Italy, so we decided to include our theme in Science Week! We investigated a chemical reaction to make our volcanos erupt! We also made some very colourful lava lamps.
We investigated the force of air with our balloon rocket experiment. We were also treated to a very interesting Zoom call 'Wild about Wildlife on the Sea Shore', where the children had the chance to ask lots of questions about wildlife on the beaches and in the waters around Ireland.
The children also had the fantastic opportunity to visit Mary Immaculate College for the Science Week 2022 STEM workshop "Bigger, Better, Brainteaser Bandits"! The children came up with some fantastic designs for a catapult! We had a great day out.

Project Work: Rivers and Oceans
During the month of October the children created some excellent projects. They created a 3D mini-project based on the journey of the river and the water cycle. They also did lots of research on the different oceans of the world. They collected information about the main sources of pollution in the oceans, and the effects it is having on ocean life. The children presented their projects to the rest of the class.
Maths Week 2022
There were lots of activities happening in our classroom this week for Maths Week 2022. We had a Maths trail outside, where we did lots of measuring and collected data from the traffic passing by. We also completed lots of Maths activities on the i-pads and interactive whiteboard. The children also created their own Maths word problems, and everyone had an opportunity to answer their classmates problem. We even decorated our classroom door with them!
Futsol
We are enjoying Futsol with Jason every Friday. We are practicing our soccer skills using different drills and playing mini-matches.

European Sports Week
We didn't let the rain stop us from enjoying some fun activities for European Sports Week. We enjoyed lots of activities including some yoga, ping-pong, tangram relays and hoola-hoop races (which also included some problem-solving and lots of teamwork!).
The Pet Farm comes to visit!
We were delighted to have a visit from the pet farm. We loved meeting all the different animals that came along to Scoil Chaitríona for the day!

Zoom Interview with David Walliams !!

The children in 5th and 6th were delighted to participate in a zoom interview with the wonderful author Mr. David Walliams recently ! It was a fantastic opportunity to hear from our favourite author. The boys and girls have enjoyed many of his entertaining books and have laughed at his hilarious characters. It was so exciting to be part of this zoom interview with David. He said he might come over to Ireland to write a book and will have Irish characters in it !
Tag Rugby with Mr Hanley
This week we did Tag Rugby with Mr. Hanley for the Active flag, he taught us all the rules.
There were four teams with four or five players on a team, we all played each other and it was great fun. The rules were easy to follow and you need speed, agility and skill.

Sandra Silberzweig
We drew portraits with wonderful designs influenced by a contemporary artist from Toronto called Sandra Silberzweig. She had a condition called synesthesia which means she can see, hear and taste colours . So her work is very, very colourful. She was influenced by Picasso's art,. We liked her work so much we were inspired to try our own portraits. We used sugar paper, chalk pastels and black sharpies. We think they turned out really well and brighten up our classroom beautifully.
Quiz on Europe
On Monday the 10th of May 2021 we participated in an international quiz about Europe to celebrate Europe Day. We had to do a lot of studying beforehand. The quiz was very challenging, but we all did our best. There were many easy questions, but many difficult ones too. At the end, three girls with the highest score in the class received a fantastic prize.
We all had a splendid day.

Soccer tournament
This week and last week 4th, 5th and 6th class played a soccer tournament. We were split into 5 teams of 6. We played 3 games every day. The 5 captains were Grace, Tammie, Wayne, Jamie and Chelsey. All the teams worked very hard and the games were very closely contested. Today we are playing the semi-final and final. Jamie and Tammie’s team have to go into sudden death to see who ends up in the final against Chelsey’s team. It's all to play for !!
